What Impact Did Greek Mythology Have On Our Society?
Have you ever thought about who came up with the idea of writing stories? Or why TV has so many drama-filled reality shows? We often say that the things in our past shape our lives today, but not many of us take the time to really try to see how it affects us. Greek Mythology has helped shaped our society religiously and in literature. However, they might have helped shape modern times, but there are many differences. The Greeks had more than one “god”, they used myths to explain things and they were, also told for entertainment.
In order to understand how Greek culture helped shape our society, you have to know what a myth is. A myth is a story that tries to explain the ways of the world and the natural events that take place in the planet. Every society has made so form of myth, but the Greeks, Norse and Romans are the most famous for them. In Greek Mythology there are twenty-one major gods and goddess. Myths are separated from legends and folk tales because they consist of some type of religious aspect. Most tell the stories of “divine beings” and their interactions with humans. The most famous myths are the Iliad by Homer and Aeneid by Virgil. In the past and maybe even today myths are still believed around the world.
A similarity in Mythology and today’s religion, like Christianity, is that they both believe there is a higher being. Since a myth isn’t something that is false, some people say that the stories in the Bible are myths. In fact some consider mythology as a type of religion. One of the differences is that in mythology a sacrifice was usually made for the atonement of sins (Thank God that isn’t in our religion today). Another difference is that in Christianity only one God is worshiped, but in mythology there were different gods for different things.
