Helping Field Summary
Human Service professionals are considered helpers, part of a profession that assists others in different aspects of their lives through different forms of help. Some professionals may offer medical help, while others may offer training or rehabilitation services. No matter which service is offered these professionals have a reason for why they have chosen this field. Of the many reasons why a person may choose to be a helper; the main reason is to help others (Woodside & McClam, 2011).
A person who chooses to enter the helping field in most cases does not choose it for fame or fortune, but they do have some other motivating factors behind their decision. According to Woodside & McClam, “One primary reason why individuals choose helping professions
(and the reason that most will admit) is the desire to help others,” (2011, pg. 163). Another reason that is not openly admitted is that of a person who likes to bend others to their will due to their way is better. Many helpers have a combination of the two by using their genuine desire to help other while getting their clients to buy in to the treatment plan set before them.

As a human service professional, there are many roles and big responsibilities involved in helping the client. In addition, an important aspect of helping the client in meeting their needs for services is respect for the various backgrounds the client will bring to the helper. This means, effective helpers are also sensitive to culture and religion (Woodside & McClam, 2011). Professionals will want to enter the field of human services because their desire to help is present, familiarity with own personal feelings/beliefs, and the need to empower the client to function on a daily basis.
