History and growth of Internet


The internet has indeed become an integral part of our lives. We depend quite a lot on the internet even for our common needs today. Right from online banking, to shopping to online dating, the internet facilitates all, and since it has been such great boon to humanity, we must try to know about its history and origin.
A network called ARPANET created a stage for the internet, by the initiative of the US Defence Department. This took place almost 40 years back.
 It was created with the purpose of encouraging communication and creation of links between various networks. This development could be very helpful in scientific and governmental uses.
They had hoped to develop a process in which information packets could be communicated amongst a number of computers simultaneously.
“Internetting” was the first name given to this project and the resulting networks came to be known as “internet”.
The terms such as Transmission control Protocol or TCP or the Internet Protocol or IP, are used in the computer world till date. These were the initial protocols created.
JCR Licklider, from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology was the first one who had conceived the idea of such a kind of networking by computers in the year 1962. This was in fact the first time when the existence of the internet could be perceived. Research began at the universities of theUSand the government level research departments.
Till the 70s, the use of the internet was limited for governmental purposes and there was very little use of it in the education department or the business world. Soon in the 80s, the scenario was completely different and the internet and its use started to spread wide and far. It was reaching beyond the world of business and education and became a mode to communicate and also reach out to the rest of the world. Today, the internet is at its best and widest.
