Title: Illegal Drugs

General Purpose: To Persuade

Thesis Statement: Over the years the United States has seen a vast increase in illegal drug users. In spite of drugs causing shortened lifespan, emotional, and physical problems, we can see the positive effects that drugs will have in our society if they were legalized. In my opinion, illegal drugs should remain illegal because they affect society, individual’s lives, and are dangerous to the human body.

Specific Goals: After completing my speech, I hope the audience will:
• Realize how much money is spent on illegal drugs.
• Understand how drugs are a hazard to our society.
• Understand that people are worth more than bringing in income into the United States.

Introduction: Did you know that from 2002 to 2007 the amount of drug users have increased by 43 percent. According to the Bureau of Justice statistics the demand of illegal drugs continues to grow dramatically in the United States which has caused stunning rates in deaths and the dissembling of relationships between friends and family. Although statistics show that these rates hold true, we see that groups are working with politicians to legalize illegal drugs. This would bring a substantial amount of income to decrease the deficit in the United States.

Body:
I. Illegal drugs should be legalized.
a. The war on drugs is affecting the United States in many ways.
i. The war on drugs is costing the United States billions of dollars every year.
1. Numbers show that the direct cost of the United States spending is 40 to 50 billion dollars per year.
a. The federal government will spend 19 billion this year.
b. State and local law enforcement will add another 10 billion.
c. We also spend 10 to 20 billion dollars each year keeping drug users...
