Is Atticus Finch a Good Role Model for Professionals?
A good role model for lawyers is someone who is skilled at their job, has strong ethics and morals, and is always going to uphold the justice system. Atticus Finch is a fictional character in Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus is a lawyer and resident of the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama, and the father of Jeremy Atticus, "Jem" and Jean Louise, "Scout". In the novel Atticus defends an innocent black man, Tom Robinson, who was charged with the rape of a white girl. Atticus is a brave man who stands up for what he believes in. He exhibits virtues like respect and patience, and he is very intelligent, which all help make him a good lawyer. Atticus Finch is a good role model for other lawyers because he has the virtues and skills that make him great at his job, and above all else he believes in justice and equality under the law.
Atticus Finch is a respectful, patient, intelligent man who brings the same virtues and skills to the courtroom that he uses in his everyday life. “Atticus …does not turn into a lawyer stereotype when he enters the courtroom. In the courtroom, Atticus shows respect to everyone despite their reputation or appearance. He refers to everyone as Mr. or Miss as a sign of respect. When Mayella thinks Atticus is making fun Judge Taylor says, “We’ve done business in this court for years and years, and Mr. Finch is always courteous to everybody” (Lee). Atticus’s proves to be patient and always remains calm, even in difficult situations. An example of this is when Bob Ewell spits in his face.
