Fiedler’s Contingency model and Blanchard situational model both provide useful knowledge regarding leadership style. The two are very similar and possess some of the same basic principles.
The situational favorableness in Fielder’s model includes leader member relations describe he mutual trust between leaders and employees. Task structure that is making sure all tasks are clear and structure. And then the leader position power, which relate to the power in the leaders position itself. A favorable situation is related to good leader member relation, a highly structured task and a higher leader position power.
Blanchard model emphasis the participating, selling, and delegating and telling leadership styles. And I feel a responsible leader will never give importance to delegating, telling and participating style. It should be high task high relationship oriented. The task expectation from a new employee and an experienced employee is different even though all are expected to be compliant with the rules and expectation of the organization. Can a leader ignore the task for relationship or relationship for task?
No leadership style is perfect each has its own strength and weakness. Fiedler’s model is more about which style is more effective in a certain situation while situational leadership is more about changing the style to fit the situation. A leader’ efficiency is revealed the way he/she manage the situation. The style of leadership that is most effective depends upon entirely on two factors employees and situation .for example In the health care setting things can get crazy anytime, decisions must be made quickly. Fielders model would suggest that a leader who possess a ask orientation would be needed to manage the situation this means if the current leader does not possess these skills then a new one must emerge.
