Leadership Style
Great leaders have different attributes and skills. Depending on the industry, workplace and other factors, leaders need to have attributes in accordance to the type of role or industry they will be working on. For example, Military leaders need to have a different set of skills than a CEO of a financial company due to they are two different missions and visions.
The leader I picked as an exemplary leader for me was in the military and he was chosen because I mirror some of his traits. 4 Star Retired General and Ex- Secretary of State Collin Powell exemplifies many traits that I believe he possess in terms of character, perseverance, determination and many others. Mr. Powell as an ambitious and brand new second lieutenant joined the military and his goal was to be a General in the US Army. With this goal in mind he mentions that one day at the Officers Club at Fort Benning GA he spotted hios old general sitting at the bar and went up to him and asked him “How do I become a general?” and that the general answered, “Son, you’ve got to work like a dog. You’ve got to have moral and physical courage. There are many days you’re tired, but you must never show fatigue. You’ll be afraid, but you can never show fear. You must always be a leader. (CNN Fortune and Money, 2011)
Collin mentioned that he did not follow this advice to become a General. He followed this advice to become a first lieutenant and then followed the same advice to become a captain and so forth. By doing this, Collin made sure that he did his best every single day concentrating on the present thinking of tomorrow and dreaming of the future. His philosophy that he was not going to make general until he became the best first lieutenant and so forth. (CNN Fortune and Money, 2011)
