Making the Most of Your Organization

Almost every one of us works in an organization of some type, whether it is a small family business, large industry, a government agency, or educational or religious institution. The purpose of the organization and its operating policies are set by the people who control it. Whatever the size or kind of organization, it is made up of people working together toward a common goal. The needs of the organization and the needs of its people must be satisfied if the organization is to succeed and remain successful.
Each organization has a variety of needs that include a purpose, clear-cut assignment of duties, good communication between management and staff, efficient production, reporting of results and so forth. Also in the organization, the individuals (staff or employees) have some needs that include some of the same things an organization needs, but also others. Individual needs include comparable salaries for those in similar positions, benefits package, opportunity to achieve and demonstrate ability, interesting work, recognition and advancement opportunities.(Nadler, 1998)

One major key in meeting these needs is having a positive work environment. Organizations must have a spirit to encourage its people to exercise their full potential. The environment of the organization shapes peoples attitudes and feelings toward their job. The right environment or climate will encourage and motivate people to perform. The wrong one discourages.
