Grendel’s Monologue
(Grendel enters his lair from the right and begins to shout for his mother) Mom! Mom! (His Mom does not hear him. Grendel begins to talk to himself.) How dare he! How dare the Geatish lord hurt me when I did nothing to him. Who cares if I killed a couple of warriors! The warriors were planning on killing me first. I heard them talking about me and about my ancestors. The evil those men in Herot Hall spoke that day when I came around to make friends with them. They did not know I was listening but I heard their gruesome plans to kill me. I then left lonely and immediately. That night I came and gave those warriors what they deserved, death. I would never let them hurt me first. The next day I found out that Beowulf had come to battle me. I ran over to Herot Hall in the middle of the night and began to get rid of them before they tried to kill me. Beowulf was awake and so were a couple of his warriors. I then grabbed Beowulf but to my surprise he grabbed my arm with greater strength. I was scared and terrified. I tried to escape but it was too late. I began to scream, hoping the noise would terrify Beowulf so he would let go. The barbarian, Beowulf ripped out my arm and now I am covered in blood. I ran back home because sleep of the sword has come for me. I am slowly reaching my end of life as grieving Grendel. I will come back and haunt Beowulf as a stronger monster that he will not be able to conquer with his bear hands. (Grendel begins to cry.) I wish in my lifetime I had friends instead of enemies. But for now good-bye to this world that is full of evil.
