HSM Personal Leadership Plan
The area of human service field that I want to work for is a school social worker. School social workers are known as advocates for equity and fairness between the students, teachers, and parents. School social workers serve as a mediators, negotiators, consultants, and advocates for all students and school personnel, by listening to students grievances. It is also a school social workers job to set up informal groups for students, teachers, and other school personnel.
In this day and age, as we all know, there are many factors involved making it difficult for some young people to make it through school such as poverty, substance abuse, community violence, early sexual activity, and family conflicts. It is up to the school social worker to pick things up, where the teachers and school personnel leave off. School social workers are professionally equipped to address the social and psychological issues that children face today and that can prevent the child’s academic progress in school.
School social workers primary purpose is to help students who have specific social psychological, emotional or physical difficulties that could put them at risk for falling through the cracks of the school system. School social workers are trained to think of innovative solutions to complex problems, and this can result in having a strong difference for the young people who are at risk for failure in school.
There are several areas that school social workers had an impact on, such as by designing a successful violence prevention program, alternative programs for gay and lesbian youth which can result in giving up and leaving school because of peer teasing and abuse. School social workers are to be experts on intervening in such crisis as teen suicides, alcohol related deaths and school violence.
