Psychology is used in many ways in today’s world. It is used to treat patients who could be suffering from depression and even help couples with marriage counseling. Psychology has been tremendously useful in learning more about the human mind and the way it works and why it works in that manner. Once you can wrap your head around the basics of psychology, which as a whole is extremely broad with various layers of complexity, you can use it to understand and help the world around you. Psychology has been used for social change in the past and will continue to be; however, most people would never be able to make the connection between social change and psychology. Only a psychologist would be capable of that.
One of the many ways Psychology can cause social change is by removing this notion of “us vs. them.” It’s the idea that someone who is different than us is automatically put on the opposite side of a mental divide. Assumptions are created about the person and they are perceived in a different manner than if they were not different, and all this is done without even talking to the person. This is not just an issue that stems from individual humans; however, it is an issue that can find its roots even in entire governments.
What so many people fail to realize about our civilization is the fact that there is only one true race; humans. Skin color is merely a variation, variations occur in all organic and inorganic organisms. Race is a social construction created from an “us vs. them” mentality that we have been fighting since our incarnation on this planet. It is something that was created by human psychology and something that can only be destroyed by human psychology. Fortunately, this divide amongst humans has started to disintegrate in recent years. America for example, two hundred years ago we enslaved African Americans and today our president is African American.
Even in the idea of us having our first African American president, we are misguided....
