Erin M Evans November 21, 2008 Psychology of Religion Part of this assignment was that we were to visit a church service not of our own faith. I shall not name the church that I went to but I visited the Church of God denomination. When I first walked into church I was greeted warmly by those who came and introduced themselves to me and my sister. We were shown to seats that were on the side of the stage. The church was like a warehouse that had been converted into sanctuary for services. I noticed that there was a removablepool in the middle of the floor near the side where we sat. A lady came onto the state and started greeting everyone, and had all first time visitors stand, then who I assume was an usher came around with a microphone and you introduced yourself to the congregation. Out of all the services I have been to this is the first time I ever had to introduce myself in front of the entire congregation, to be honest it was a little weird but I still was not turned off to the service. It wasn’t until later when I became a little skittishabout the church. After the sermon it was time for those to get baptized I was shocked to see that members could baptize members. They even gave pamphlets out to remind you to stay in close contact with those of your church, and basically to avoid those who didn’t believe the same things that you believed. It was a little surreal, one second they were preaching about sharing the word of God, and then in the next breath they were telling others to shun and keep away from those who did not go to their church. I was very confused. Later in the week I was talking to one of the mentees about the church and she told me that she used to attend that church. She said that when she was there the teens were so nice and supportive always inviting her over to sleepovers, and to outings, but once her parents decided to leave the church and go to a church of a different denomination she was shunned.
