Some would question the wisdom of returning to school to pursue an MBA after already spending over 35 years in the workforce. The argument could be made that there won’t be a payback related to the cost of a degree or a guarantee of advancement in a current job as a result of the new graduate degree. But the pursuit of an MBA is driven by much more than the desire for increased salary or a new job title. The MBA becomes the catalyst for the reinvention of yourself and provide the credentials necessary for the pursuit of an encore career. This is using school to move forward, not just going back to school. Retirement, looming for many baby boomers, traditionally meant looking forward to golf, fishing, or perhaps running a bed and breakfast. But now, many 50+ individuals from all walks of life are looking forward to many years of productive service and would like to take their years of experience and wisdom to the next level. In the case of the author, the next level would be teaching at the community college level. De Meglio in 2006 found that the desire for a career change drives many people to college. And that desire for a career change is happening to Baby Boomers at an age that previously signaled it was time to prepare to slow down. According to Kanter (2006) individuals approaching 60 grew up under child-centered philosophies as espoused by Dr. Benjamin Spock that emphasized their own significance which will not now be lessened simply because they have reached retirement age which may act as a career ceiling. Kanter also envisions going to a university at 50 or 60 will be the norm with every major university having graduate schools designed specifically for accomplished professionals. Pursuing the degree after age 50 is not a rarified event. On the contrary, over the past year, over 1 million students over 50 were expected to enroll in college for reasons ranging from career changes to life enrichment, and the chance to change the world...
