Pyramid of Intervention
The Pyramid of Intervention is a model that schools use as support that will provide struggling students with help. It is a three tiered model that supports instruction and intervention for the students who need more academic support. Educators plan by using standards and through the curriculum they monitor the student progress. They do this through observations, assessments, and student work. Students learn the curriculum differently and teachers may have to implement many interventions to help students be successful. They may develop their learning skills in many ways and this depends on their readiness levels, class participation, and the support they may receive from their parents. Many students may learn faster than others, others may experience some difficulties keeping up with the class. Those students, who are not keeping up with the class, are the ones who need an intervention to help them try to catch up. Schools are increasingly implementing response to intervention (RTI) or tiered systems of support in an attempt to more effectively and efficiently meet the needs of all students, especially those who are at risk for early reading difficulties (Coyne, et al., 2013). The Pyramid of Intervention has a purpose, can be developed for a school, and can be compared to many other interventions, curriculum, or strategies.
The purpose of a Pyramid of Intervention is that is should provide a clear framework for teachers and set goals for students. It is designed to meet the needs of all students and gives them the support that they need to be successful. This pyramid also gives support for improving the referral process for special education.
