Single Parenting: Overcoming the Odds






















Society today is in worse shape than it was in the 80’s and 90’s and
“children living with two married parents has decreased seventy seven percent
since 1980”(“Family Structure and Children’s Living Arrangements.”
ChildrensStats.gov). There is a lot of prejudice against single-family parenting
and according to statistics “A child in a single-parent household is far more likely
to experience violence, commit suicide, continue a cycle of poverty, become drug
dependent, commit a crime or perform below his peers in education”(K. Wall 1
pretty much assuming that a child raised in a single family home has little to no
chance of becoming a successful member of society. Regardless of the reason
why children may be raised in single-family homes, there is hope for the future of
these children and it takes dedication, time and effort. One parent is better than
none. Single parent households can beat the odds and raise successful children
by creating schedules and routines, setting rules and boundaries, being aware,
and becoming fully involved in the child’s life and being committed.
Beating the odds and raising successful well-behaved children can be
quite the challenge for single parents. Single parents take on so much more
extra responsibility when raising a child/children alone. They are solely
responsible for providing for their children, working, providing daycare, making
sure the bills are paid and food is on the table, cleaning, laundry and so much
more. On top of that a single parent needs to tend to their child’s wants and
needs, must be aware of what is going on in their child’s life outside of the home
and provide correct discipline. It seems impossible to juggle with so much to do
and little time with so much to get done.
