The Sleep Effect on College Students’ Academic Achievement

Many College Students are sleep deprived; their functioning in school isn’t effected enough due to the tardiness which affects the grades and social life. Researchers have found that loss of sleep is linked to disorganization but varies from one individual to another (Robinson, & Richardson-Robinson, 1922). Yet another study shows that college and especially the first year is the most stressing event because at that time autonomy and responsibilities are at significant increase (Russell, & Petrie, 1992; Kleeman, & Richardson, 1985) (as cited in Brown, Soper, Barlow& Buboltz Jr.,2001). The purpose of the study is to indicate poor school performance and behavior changes of students with lack of sleep. More studies is needs to be done to prevent college students from
Sleep deprivation have been an issue for decades among college students. Today’s college students struggle with competition on the job market, which is a huge psychological pressure for them. Such stress and anxiety in most scenarios leads to medical issues or and even university issues (Waleed et al., 2011). Lack of sleep is usually very common in universities, students don’t have enough time to sleep or nap due to academic pressure. Many universities pressure their students, without the knowledge that many students have outside life as work, children and other duties which might take lots of their daytime. Student academic performance and poor sleep in the consequence may be more spread out on the effect of functioning, such as good reasoning, thinking, reaction (Howell, Jahrig, & Powell 2004).
