Social Movement
There have been many social movements that haveinfluencedindividual gender groups in our society and transformed the world we live in. As defined the word “feminism is the theory of the political, economic, and the social equality of the sexes” (Webster’s Dictionary, 2014). The women’s movement is recognized as one of the best known movements of current eras in which the movement was led by feminist groups called the suffragettes; the Suffragettes arguedthat women deserved equal rights. They fought for women’s right to vote and the right to equally work, the same equal rights that many women in today’s society take for granted. During the time of the civil rights movements the women’s right movements once againrose when women joinedthe workplace in multitudes and the scandalousinitiationthe pill and of abortion would inevitably change the aspect of the world women lived in even in today’s society. As stated in a newspaper article that “In this wave, women strived to reach a further sense of equality with men and to allow women to have a greater control over their body and the protection from physical abuse” (New York Times, 2009. p6). Women were demanding respect and that their rights to be respected.
The 1960’s was an era of change. Women became more vocal and strived for equal opportunity among all people.The feminist group the Suffragettes fought in search of equal rights for women, specificallywomen’s rightespecially during the time of war. “Women’s groups during this time period received much opposition and criticism, this only lead to more organized liberation movements completely dedicated to breaking the constraints they lived with because of archaic and sexist assumptions” (Watson, Barbara, 1993. p.3).
