Society Demands More Education in Public Service

One of the reasons why I started the process to obtain a master’s degree in addiction counseling is to pursue a career providing services to people who need help. I have always been drawn to the stereotypical “it is a lost cause”. This saying is a challenge I can not refuse because no matter how dark it becomes there is always a way. I understand that some people may not want to be helped but sometimes one caring word is remembered in the darkest times. Life is very hard, some people live it, some people hate it, some people would like it to be over but amongst all the confusion, there is always hope. So even though I have a bachelor in social psychology, the work force in today’s society demands more education in public service. I believe that it is important to have as much education in these fields as possible in order to give every client as much assistant as possible.

It is also difficult for me to enter the field because most of my experience is in the dental field. Presently I am a dental treatment counselor but I was a dental assistant for seven years. I help patients’ understand the treatment that has been diagnosed. I also help patient to understand their dental insurance as much as possible and to file their claims for work that was performed. I also inform them of what the insurance is estimated to cover and what their options are for financial help. I can offer limited in house payment plans or a third party lender. Most patients’ do get upset because of a number of reasons. One reason is that their misunderstanding or assumptions that their insurance is suppose to cover more. When patients sign up for their dental benefits, they do not read the fine print. Patients also do not educate themselves on dental terminology. In do so, would result in picking the proper plan that would best suit their needs. The second reason is that they do not believe the diagnosis that the doctor gave is true.
