During the early times of slavery white southerners were practicing the act of white supremacy. Meaning, all power and last sayings came in control of the white master. Many African Americans were not happy and temporarily had no input on whether it was right or not to be treated this way. Until a time came where African Americans got tired of being treated like anti-citizens and fought back. The result of this was the Civil war between the North and the South.
After the Civil War came a time where President Lincoln and Johnson had to get together and reconstruct the south. During the period of reconstruction white southerners were very disappointment of the outcome that favored the African Americans. Blacks were now given rights under the 13th Amendments that stated “whites could not reestablish slavery after the war.” This was beneficial to the African American because they could now get away from the times of suffering from hard labor and with no pay. Whites however, were afraid that African Americans would now take over because after the 13th amendment was passed came the 14th shortly after, granting the freed slaves citizenship. Under this amendment it gave more power to the national government rather than the state. The white southerners also thought this was a problem because during slavery most of the power rested within the States. So with the power now resting with the nation the white people could not be in charge of most of things that they wanted to control.
Although the white southerners were losing power nothing was more important than the passing of the 15th Amendment. This stated that African American males were given the right to vote regardless of race. This now cancelled the interpretation of the black codes that the whites had set up.
