This paper will address the importance of proper social media marketing strategies and market research. “Whether you are an individual, a start-up, small business or a large corporation, an online presence and an ongoing conversation with your constituents is a baseline requirement -- and will take time and expertise” (Neti, S. 2011 p.14). Social media offers a low cost edge with access to over one billion visitors per month. NPOs should utilize social media platforms as a way of marketing to consumers otherwise out of budget range.
Non-profits are traditionally funded through government grants, public fund raising events, and private donations. The development of web 2.0 has changed what was formally was considered a one-dimensional monologue into an engaging two-dimensional dialogue. Social media allows open engagement and the ability to form a following or online presence. This has caused many for profit businesses to engage in social media marketing campaigns on platforms such as; Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. .
NPOs face several difficulties that do not apply to most for profit businesses. Many of these difficulties are funding related, or the strategic use of information technology (IT). Proper market research and identifying target audiences has an important impact on community building. Community building is the key to success with social media.
