The Lottery by Shirley Jackson

The Lottery by Shirley Jackson

Week 3 Analytical Essay
The authors that I picked for week 3, the analytical essay assignment are The Lottery by author Shirley Jackson and A Clean Well Lighted Place by author Ernest Hemingway . The themes of the stories are very different. A contrast instead of a comparison will allow the literary devices to show up more clearly. Both of these authors have done something special as they tell the story. These stories were well written and the attention of the reader was not straying and that is important to a story so that it can be successful.
The themes and styles were different although something’s could be considered the same. The Lottery was a weird story to read as at the end the winners were stoned. But, the symbolic idea of the story shined through as everything took place around a black box once a year. The remembrance of the ritual showed struggle. The literary devices were described very well. The theme was about the lottery and it really lasted throughout the story. I did not feel that there was much foreshadowing in the story everything was told as it was happening. As stated earlier the climax was of interest as I did not see it coming this is a dynamic climax. Some characters developed sarcasm as the story went on.
The story A Clean Well Lighted Place showed wisdom through the age gaps. The theme revolved around the clean well lighted place then later on I would say that it went on to be about the waiters and or bartenders. Again the literary devices were described in detail. The clean place could be considered iconic as the story evolves. The tone is calm almost as if relaxed. Some of the tone throughout the story could be as some would call monotone. This style of writing is good for slow readers they can understand better, and to make a point, or to get the idea of what the writer was thinking across.
