Writing assignment #2 Today the executive branch consists of the governor of California and other elected constitutional officers such as the president of the united states and eight executive officers the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, controller, treasurer, insurance commissioner, and superintendent of public instruction; These bodies are all elected by California voters. California's executive branch is headed by the Governor. During the progressive era people began to challenge industrial and political corruption at the state and local levels. Voters in California and many other cities and states succeeded in their fight for direct primary elections and the secret ballot to eliminate bribes and reduce the power of political machines. Many states passed laws granting voters the power of initiative, or allowing Americans to vote directly for or against specific laws, and the power to recall corrupt elected officials. This was all helping to form the system we have today, Our people voting for the people. Today California has a Judicial branch which is composed of the supreme court of california and lower courts, and is mainly responsible for interpreting the law. In the US government the supreme court is the final authority on the interpretation of the federal Constitution.People that work in this field are judges, magistrates and other adjudicators who form the core of a judiciary. Before the Progressive Era, child offenders over the age of seven were imprisoned with adults. But the actions of political and social reformers began to change society's views on juvenile delinquents. Reformers who were interested in rehabilitating rather than punishing children built the New York House of Refuge in 1824. Here they housed juveniles who earlier would have been placed in adult jails.
