Summary to “Popular Mechanics” Author Raymond Carver’ story, “Popular Mechanics,” describes the progress of a couple breaking up. Both of them eagerly want the baby. In the end, the man and the woman start fighting over the baby before he leaves. The baby is crying because he is the only “little thing” that makes them related. Reaction to “Popular Mechanics” Carver does not point out the story talks about a breaking couple. However, we know these from their action and dialogue. Author describes outside environment is turning dark and melting snow at the beginning, which implies there is a bad thing as following. We know each of them has bad mood at that moment. From melting snow, we know that purity of the relationship between man and woman is leaving. An emotional woman impresses me at first. “I’m glad you’re leaving! I’m glad you’re leaving! She said. Do you hear?” She acts like a psychopath, out of control. However, she is not really glad to see the man’s leaving. She begins crying in front of the man. She does not have excuses to make the man to stay. Then, she wants to keep the baby. In the story, the baby is an important symbol; the baby stands for hope, the fruit of their love, the connection of the man and woman. On the other hand, the man starts trying to take the baby away. The motive can be interpreted by many ways which depends on the symbols of the baby. Actually, I think the man wants the woman suffered by taking away the baby. He wants to cut off the woman’s hope. He wants to take away everything so that he will no longer have any connection with her. Therefore, he takes away his thing first. Then he aims at the baby. “He crowed her into the wall then, trying to break her grip”. He turns his love into hate. When the woman is screaming, he is still working on losing her fingers. In the end, Carver does not mention the result of the baby. That makes us to read the story again and again. We even do not know any names of any characters in the...
