Profile Process Planning Sheet: Analyzing the Rhetorical Situation
Week 1 Assignment
Please answer the following questions in complete sentence and paragraph format. Although this is not a formal essay assignment, please note that proper spelling, grammar, and sentence structure are required. This week’s lecture and Chapters 2 and 3 in your text will help you work through some of the terms within the rhetorical situation.
Defining Topic, Angle, Purpose
1. What is your chosen topic? (For example: a profile of Barb Collins, a volunteer at the local homeless shelter; a profile of “Shipwreck Days,” a citywide flea market and festival; or a profile of Burdick’s Grocery, the oldest family-owned business in town.)
The topic I have selected is a tropical island off of the west coast of Thailand. It is the exotic island of Phuket. It’s a mountainous island in the Andaman Sea. It offers some of the most beautiful beaches, clear ocean waters for diving, and many high end resorts.
Phuket Island has such a paradise atmosphere about it, it makes one want to know more about it, such as its people who reside there, its economy base, their infrastructure and how it relates to their way of life.
2. What personal angle can you present on this topic? (Consider what is new about the topic or what unique perspective can be shared about this topic.)
Phuket Island has become one of most popular tourist hot spots in the world. It has been rated one of the top retirement destinations. With the great amount of tourists from the west and Europe, most of the population in Phuket speaks English as their second language. From the friendly Thai waitresses, to the always smiling taxi drivers, Phuket is full of history, culture, and excitement.
Patong, which is the name of the main town on Phuket Island, is known for its more casual atmosphere instead of the vacation and resort atmosphere, it has many establishments for dancing, drinking, and entertaining.
