What Has Informed Your Decision To Choose A Career In Social Work And What Do You Feel You Will Be Able To Bring To The Profession?

From an early age I developed a strong interest in working with children with disabilities. This passion started when I joined a youth club, at the age of 10, called P.H.A.B (physically handicapped and able bodied) where I stayed for 8 years going on to become an honorary member and junior leader. Later working within a residential community home where several of the young people lived. From very early on I placed a large emphasis upon enabling disabled/vulnerable individuals to live within society, play an active part within their local community and be valued as individuals, increasing their community presence. I also became involved with Chailey Heritage’s annual scout camp, and still am. This enables young people with disabilities to experience activities/opportunities that otherwise may not be available to them. Youth clubs, camps and community houses help to increase other people’s awareness of individuals with disabilities which will hopefully create a more accepting society with a reduction in discrimination. This interest led me to study a GNVQ Advanced in Health and Social Care and Learning Difficulties at degree level, where different work placements provided me with even greater opportunities and experiences.

The purpose of this application is to enable me to resume my studies whilst continuing to work within Social Services. I believe that this approach will enable me to enhance my overall knowledge and understanding. The resultant improvement in my skill set will enable me to become a greater asset to my clients, colleagues and the organisation as a whole. I believe the Social Work Masters will contribute to my professional development and credibility whilst enhancing my understanding of the theory behind the practical work within this field.
