Confessions of a Shopaholic proved that it is more than an empty and shallow movie, it is a fun romantic comedy that also provided helpful insights about consumerism and excessive buying. It covered everything from the whirlwind attractiveness of advertising and how we are compelled to buy things that we don’t need. The main character is Rebecca, who proved to be an engaging character despite her materialism and poor impulse control for shopping. The movie ingrained a lot of symbolisms for a lighthearted comedy, like the green scarf that Rebecca went through ends just to have it. Its juxtaposition to money in real life was clever, and how we too, like, Rebecca tend to fall as a victim for this. The need in buying unnecessary expensive things was the key that needed to be resolved for Rebecca’s development, and I feel like the movie would have felt flat if it failed to critic Rebecca’s behavior or when they just leave it as a characteristic. Confessions of a Shopaholic explored the themes of financial restraint and false advertising that it’ll make you think twice of your own shopping habits as well.

I have always positioned myself as the balanced shopper. It’s something that got people to tease me constantly because I am an obvious ‘kuripot’. I try my best to be savvy when it comes to shopping, and buy products that will satisfy me without having losing too much in my earnings. One of my rules for shopping is to try googling and research first a product/company before becoming their customer. When it comes to skin products and makeup, I rarely buy on impulse. I check online reviews first to make a decision because I hate ending up buying products that turn out to be terrible. I’ve been a victim numerous times because of this, mostly because the packaging and advertising interested me.
