A Change Strategy for Gene
Gene One was formed in 1996, by Don Ruiz. Gene One is in the biotech industry. It began work in gene technology that eliminated disease in tomatoes and potatoes. In less than eight years, Mr. Ruiz grew Gene One to a successful $400 million company. Since his passing, there has been discussions about Gene One’s future. Many have questioned who will be able to lead the company and will Gene One continue to thrive without Don’s leadership. After much deliberating, the Board of Directors determined that Ms. Michelle Houghton is the right one to lead Gene One. Michelle was one of the original five that started the company. Many in the company, including the Board, have profound respect for Michelle and her leadership abilities. When the initial decision to go public was decided, Michelle was reluctant to move forward with the plan. Her main concerns were the stability of the investment environment and recent negative publicity surrounding the biotech industry. Unfortunately, the Don was unable to move forward with his plans due to his death. Now that Michelle is the new leader of Gene One, she has determined that Gene One has several areas that needed to be address before the company begins to entertain the idea of becoming an IPO.
Some of the challenges that Gene One faces is the experience level and leadership capabilities of the senior leadership team regarding IPOs and the communication plan that informs the employees of the new plan for change. It will be an enormous task to get the employees of Gene One to develop into a global giant from the small start-up company of their past. Management is planning to enter a new section
