A Close Call


Have you ever had a frightening childhood incident? I did at the age of 10 years old . You see I’m deeply fearful of a swimming and for a good reason . After I nearly drowned, and died in a lake swimming is the last thing that I would ever do again in my life . There was nothing that could’ve ever prepared me for the terror I would go though that day at the Lake.

I could remember being around 10 yrs old 5 ft 1in I was quiet tall for my age. I had a slender built with shoulder length hair in which, I worn in pigtails with matching bows on each side. I was a fearless kid for my age very curious about things I loved bugs, climbing trees, playing in dirt all the things that some little girls hated were just the opposite for me. I was born here in Chicago, but visited my dad in Batesville Mississippi on summer breaks. I always looked forward to going down south, because it was so much fun and all my friends were there. We would play for hours from sun up to sun down; stick ball was my favorite game.

It was near the end of the school year in June of 1985 which meant that the summer break was about to begin. As I was steadily watched the clock to strike 2:30 pm the bell rang and school was officially over. I raced home and packed my clothes for my visit to Mississippi. This was a special visit for me, because my older sister had flown in from California and I hadn’t seen her in months.. I left on a Thursday afternoon and as always prepared myself for that long 15 hour train ride which felt like eternity. I finally arrived in Mississippi as the train ride wasn’t painful the heat was unbearable it felt like a steam bath out there. As I stepped off the train my dad and sister happily greeted me.
