The E-Myth At the top of the introduction to the book is a quote by Joseph Heller that reads, “I think that maybe inside any business, there is someone slowly going crazy.” As soon as I read that quote, I knew that I was going to like this book. I liked the humor at the beginning because I knew that the author was going to be realistic and make ideas that I could relate to. Being able to relate to the author helped clear my understanding of a few entrepreneur terms (including entrepreneurship itself), notice examples around me and help give me a lot of warnings of weaknesses I could have in my future business. On the first day of class when we began our discussion on characteristics of an entrepreneur, I said that it is someone who took on risk to start a successful business. I was quite disappointed when I was told that that many entrepreneurs weren’t successful. The remainder of the class period was spent with some frustration. As I began reading the E-Myth, I was quickly humbled. The book stated at the beginning that businesses don’t have very much to do entrepreneurship. I learned that my idea was a myth, the e-myth, “that most people who start businesses are entrepreneurs” and “the fatal assumption that an individual who understands the technical work of a business can successfully run a business that does that technical work.” I realized that I was one of the people who believed this myth. I thought that anyone who had the characteristic of an entrepreneur could run a successful business. Reading on I learned about Gerber’s three characteristics we all have inside us, the Entrepreneur, the Manager, and the Technician. I was really surprised to learn that the typical business owner is only ten percent entrepreneur! I thought businesses were run by entrepreneurs!
