I am presently a Minister which forms part of the Rodrigues Regional Assembly. This is a decentralised government system which is part of the Republic Of Mauritius. I am 39 years old and I joined politics in 2000. Since I have been an active member of my party The Mouvement Rodriguais, which occupies now 10 out of 18 seats in the Regional sassembly thus forming the governement. I was previously an edfucation officer. I taught languages to students aged 14 to 20.
I can say that I was very lucky because as soon as I joined politics I was given the post of Secretary of my party. Now I am the General Secretary. I was fortunate to be part of the Regional Assembly at the very start of its inception in 2002. Though I was in the opposition party, I can say that I was one of the pioneers of this assembly. Our Party won the elections in 2006 and now I am the No 3 of the government. During this mandate I I am in charge of the Socia Security, Women's Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. Our Island is not independent,it is autonomous. The autonomy which has been bestowed on us is not really one which functions as we still have to rely heavily on the mainland which is 650 kilometres awy for finance. All important issues are still being controlled by the Republic and even if we are considerd the poorest region of the republic we are not given the same treatment.
We receive only 10 million dollars as budget for infrastructural, land, employment, economic and social development for a population of 40,000 people.Needless tos say that ther is a brain d5rain as all our people flee the poverty situation to seek for a better life somewhere else
