Unit 4 Journal
This week we learned about gang violence and the different forms of antisocial behaviors. The three most common forms are; physical assault, drug and substance misuse such as drug dealing and trafficking, and intimidation. These are used very often in organized gangs, they assault people just because they feel that they can. The sell drugs and usually get the young teens to sell it for them, this is also where intimidation comes in, and they intimidate the people in the communities to get their way. This week we also discussed what Child Protection System (CPS) is and what they are there for. CPS is designed to protect minor children from any form of abuse or neglect. Whether it is physical, emotional, verbal, sexual or mental abuse. Or when they are being neglected of their basic necessities such as food, heat, clothing, etc. This week taught us about when the courts and CPS remove the child from the home, in special circumstances it is not necessary. In a case where the parents are struggling to make ends meet and they are having a difficult time putting food on the table or keeping the light on, although the children are not being physically hurt, they are being neglected and CPS should get involved, however the child should not be removed from the home. We also discussed how the family and home structure can great affect the antisocial behaviors of adolescents. When they come from dysfunctional families, they are at higher chances of engaging in delinquent activities and even gang involvement. During this week’s assignment we were to discuss three proactive solutions to gang violence, in my opinion, I think that funding more prevention programs in communities where delinquency is a higher risk would be a great start. Of course, I do not think that it would completely diminish gang violence, but I think it would be a step in the right direction.
