Justification of Research Strength of concrete is commonly considered most valuable property although, in many practical cases, other characteristics such as durability and permeability may in fact be more important. Nevertheless, strength usually gives an overall picture of the quality of concrete because strength is directly related to structure of the hydrated cement paste. Moreover, the strength of concrete is invariably a vital element of structural design and is specified for compliance purposes. Today, strength of concrete specified by structural designer but produced at construction sites for construction works has fallen below the expected. This has degenerated into serious structural defect and consequent collapse of structural elements. One of the contributory factors is the proportioning of the mix ingredients. Investigations carried out revealed that the conventional mix ratios are always followed to the letter by site foremen irrespective of the properties exhibited by the aggregates. Damp sand can occupy as much as one-third more volume than either dry or saturated sand so if the specified quantity is followed but damp sand is used, the mix will contain a good deal less sand than was intended and the mix will be harsh, difficult to work with and produce concrete with honey combs, Cement Marketing Company Limited, London, ‘Good Concrete Work’. The properties of the aggregate that affect mix selection include: degree of fineness of the fine aggregate (measured by its fineness modulus), grading of the coarse aggregate, effect of bulkage of the fine aggregate, degree of absorption, moisture content of aggregate and quantity of water added to the mix. A study into concrete mix design has therefore been carried out. Considering the effect of changes in the above mentioned properties that affect strength of concrete production, a standard concrete mix design template has been designed for use in concrete production.
