In the modern society, it seems that the differences between people are growing less and less. We all use the same social network; wear the same so-called fanciest clothes and even have the same mobile phones. In the future described by Black Mirror, all the men and women dress in a same orange clothes and wake up in the morning to do the same work and pass their free time by playing dumb video games or watching pointless TV shows. It seems that all people are the same. So what make us us?
In a world like that of the black mirror, people are forced to do the same things. However, what interest me is that hardly anyone has ever thinks of rebellion. So their lives are made of countless and purposeless (for them) repetitions of obeying orders. From my perspective, they make no difference from machines which are also capable of endless repetitions. Here is the question: are they still people? I think not.
Sartre’s opinion said that people exist only because they are free and what they chose made them them. In the black mirror, Abi(the girl who become a porn star) tried to become a singer at the beginning. However, when the judges told her that she was born to be a porn star and refused to accept her as a singer, she hesitated. But at last, she gave up fighting and accepted the judges’ offer to become a porn star. Leave alone the possible effect of the mysterious drink, when she stand on the stage helplessly, being yelled by thousands of people viewing the show, instead of trying to make her own decision, she looked at Bing and tried to seek advise from him. At this moment, if she cannot make her own choice, Abi is no longer herself.
Bing(the man who tried to stand against the society) think thoroughly about the world and decided to fight against it. However, when the judges said that they admire his gift of critical thinking, Bing, listening to the yelling of “Do it” from thousands of viewer, he also hesitated and choose the opposite path he previously assumed....
