Gambling according to the Merriam-Webster’s dictionary states that it is “to play a game for money or property b: to bet on an uncertain outcome c: to stake something on a contingency: take a chance.”Gambling is an activity enjoyed by many people around the world. It is a fun way to spend time and a way that people are able to gain access to easily made money. If not for gambling many things would not be the same in the world. Many people have gained their fortune on gambles and gambling. Many people have also lost their fortunes on gambles and gambling. Gambling is also a very addicting activity to have. It can cause people to do stupid things or ruin good things in a person’s life. The widespread of gambling has been both beneficial and destructive to our society in this day of age. The word addicting by definition in Merriam-Webster’s dictionary is “to devote or surrender oneself to something habitually or obsessively.” That is exactly what gambling is, very addicting. Peoplewhen they first start to gamble will usually start out with something small to gamble with. They will then either get away with it or win something from it. This in turn gives them a rush of some sort and will provoke them to trying something with even higher stakes next time. This will continue until that persongets caught or loses. When this happensa person will them say to themselves that they cannot quit doing what they are doing until they can finally beat the odds against them. The cycle will then continue. Some people might say that a person being an addictive gambler has no effect other than on that person’s wallet that is not completely true. A person will have a large decrease in the sizeof their wallet but it can hurt other people too. Addiction to gambling can lead a person to go into depression or suicide, break-up a happily married family, make a person turn to crime for money, unemployment and dept to name a few.
