Abstract
Many students at RMS are not meeting the district and state standards. In addition to achieving higher test scores, our Superintendent wants all students to gain an in-depth understanding of important concepts, as well as develop higher-order thinking skills. I will be identifying examples of learning activities and explaining why each of them is likely to contribute to high levels of student achievement and learning. I will also be identifying attributes of learners that significantly influence what and how they learn and explaining why each of these attributes potentially affects learning.
Final Response to Challenge A
If we at RMS are to be a school that provides students with a high-achieving environment, we must believe all students can learn, have high expectations for all students, and provide an enriched curriculum. The students, on the other hand, must be involved in a variety of learning activities that are challenging and aligned with learning goals, promote engaged learning, and draw on the culture, life experiences, and knowledge of all of the students. Students must discuss, argue, and analyze issues and concepts. They must explore, solve problems, and construct knowledge rather than just memorize it. Their work must be authentic, engaging, and important; making sure it builds understanding from in-depth investigation.
As the leader of RMS, I am here to propose various examples of learning activities that are likely to result in high levels of student achievement and learning, based on the latest research that explains why. While I do not want to suggest that these types of learning activities are the only ones you, the teachers, should use, I want to justify my selection of activities by showing you how they reflect the research on learning.
