Functional Areas of Business
In every business a number of functions must be done regularly. Stock must be bought, bills must be paid, customers must be served and customer enquiries must be answered. In a small firm all these jobs may be done by one or two people. In a large organization, people specialize in different tasks and managers are in charge of keeping it all together.
The most important functional area is management. Management is the glue that holds every other function together by coordinating the effective use of all resources, both physical resources and those based on human capital. Leadership is a subset of management and involves working with people and influencing them to accomplish a goal. Leadership might be one of the more difficult functional areas to master since it involves the uncertainty of dealing with other human beings. A good manager must be optimistic and positive, with an attitude of abundance, not scarcity. Should shelve his ego, and always work on what’s good for the company as a whole.
Management must exhibit hard and honest work on day to day operations, to earn a positive reputation for its company. They also have man procedures set in place to ensure ethical behavior for everyone within the company. Managers can influence the compliances status of the company.
Management can identify any weaknesses and turn them into strengths by applying effective communication skills. Management can also apply some prior knowledge skills about the group of individuals they are targeting. Management will also provide a combination of products, ideas, services and strategies.
