Gender Issues
Over the past few decades there has been much debate on gender issues. Gender roles are an important part for every one in all stage of life, because these roles are the basic building blocks of our society. Being an important resource for developing a better future for mankind, academics, and national organizations have begun to pay close attention to the impact of such negativity and how to move beyond.
Typically, gender bias begins with no consideration for potential long term impact on children development. For example, children's books frequently portray girls as acted upon rather than active. Girls are represented as sweet, naive, conforming, and dependent, while boys are typically described as strong, adventurous, independent, and capable. Boys tend to have roles as fighters, adventurers and rescuers, while girls in their passive role tend to be caretakers, mothers, and princesses in need of rescuing, and characters that support the male figure. Often, girl characters achieve their goals because others help them, whereas boys do so because they demonstrate ingenuity and perseverance. If females are initially represented as active and assertive, they are often portrayed in a passive light toward the end of the story. Girl characters that retain their active qualities are clearly the exception. Thus, studies indicate that not only are girls portrayed less often than boys in children's books, but both genders are frequently presented in stereotypical terms as well.
