Essay Good Girl
Sectarian violence is a problem in many countries. For example in USA and Denmark but especially in Northern Ireland where there is a tension between Catholics and Protestants. Even though the tension is not as big as it used to be, they still do not like each other. This is what the Catholic girl Chrissy learns when she gets tortured by her own fellow Catholics, because she dated a Protestant named Ian.
The story revolts around 3 persons, Chrissy, Eilish and Ian. There are also some other persons in the story but they do not have as big a role in the story, Chrissy’s sisters Gemma and Anna there is also and Eilish´ gang.
Chrissy and Eilish are Catholic’s and Ian is a Protestant.
It takes place in Northern Ireland and the story starts in medias res where the Catholic Chrissy is inside a building with concrete walls. She yells but no one can hear her.
Then there is a flashback where the atmosphere is more relaxed because she is in her room and preparing for her date with her boyfriend Ian who is a Protestant. He is polite and mannerly and good looking, “He was better-looking than all the boys she knew, much taller and with clear skin, and blue eyes that almost took her breath away” (page 70). Even though they have different religions that do not seem to be a problem for them. They met at debate that was a part of the Progamme for Mutual Understanding and fell into conversation.
Gemma, Chrissy’s younger sister, is very curious and wants to know where she is going. Chrissy thinks she is a bit of annoying, but of course she loves her sister.
Even though that it is Northern Ireland and she dates a Protestant, her older sister Anna lets her go out with a minor warning “just be careful. Politicians signing peace agreements and the IRA and the loyalist talking about cease-fires and handing in their weapons doesn’t mean that things are safe and settled here in the North yet” (page 69).
