Healthcare communication – Scenario 2 “Vivian”
Introduction:
Communication can be defined as words, whether verbal or nonverbal, that is used to express a thought, feeling or idea. In order for communication to be effective there must be mutual understanding and respect between the sender and receiver of the message.   In healthcare effective communication is a vital role, the healthcare provider should provide quality care to all their patients. Healthcare communication is shaped by many influences including personal goals, skills, cultural orientation, situational factors and consideration of other people’s feelings. (Establishing a context for health communication, 2004).   The importance of Health communication is to reduce the patient’s anxiety level, help prevent unnecessary mistakes, and have complete understanding of what is expected of the involved parties.

Overview of the Scenario:
Vivian had abdominal pains for the past week but was without medical coverage for sometime. Vivian has recently begun a new job and received health care insurance through her new place of employment but is now covered and decided to make an appointment to see the doctor. When Vivian arrived at the doctors’ office she was observant as to the color scheme which was dull and dismal in color along with the notices she saw; on stated “no cell phone” the other “have your co-pay ready”.
