An Information Technology Manager's Job description

The requirements of being a effective information technology manager are many. The information technology manager must be able to perform roles such as a leader, politician and motivator in an organization. The information technology manager must be able to perform functions such as computer operations, systems development and many more which will be discussed later. Finally, they must have acquire skills such as hard skills and soft skills. A well rounded information technology manager will have a balanced combination of all these traits, which can help make the manager be very effective in his organization.

Roles of an IT manager
The information technology manager must be a leader, a politician and a motivator in his organization. As a leader they must be able to inspire and direct their teams to achieve goals. The information technology leader must have certain qualities such as a positive attitude, values on loyalty and integrity, characteristics such as compassion and charisma and courage and credibility. (Air Force Pamphlet 36-2241, 2009, bk. 244). Information technology managers must lead their information technology teams by providing vision, delegating work, creating an energetic and positive environment, and setting an example of appropriate and effective behavior. As a politician the manager must be able to exploit useful relationships with others internally and externally of the company (Yong & Huff, 2007). By being astute as a politician, the information technology manager can overcome barriers encountered in other departments of the organization and more aptly to get projects done without setbacks.
