In 1979 the one child policy was introduced in China. The aim of the one child policy was to reduce fertility levels to 1.7 children per family.
The one child policy operates by enforcing a rule that allows a couple to have only one child. People that break the rule can be heavily fined and they lose their entire child benefits. Some wealthy people can afford the fine and pay the government to have a second child but this is very rare.
Many people argue about the one child policy. Many people think it’s inconvenient and against human rights but others think it’s very effective and has dramatically improved china’s standard of living. Some other people simply don’t more than one child and have accepted the policy. I personally think that people should be able to choose how many kids they want and not have the government deciding for people but on the other hand, I can see that china has an immense population and can there is evidence that it has helped and is still helping. Many kids in China dislike the policy because it prevents them from having a brother or sister.
The one child policy has prevented an outstanding 400 million births. The graph If the one child policy continues, hopefully after 2025 the population will decrease by 10 million every year. China’s should also improve social and economic circumstances in the future.
Chinas future is very unpredictable. The graph shows the effect that the one child policy has had on the country. It is estimated that the policy has prevented over 40 million births. The amount of elderly people is going to rapidly increase; this is going have a big effect economically because there is not going to be enough skilled workers for jobs. A change in the policy will be very popular inside the country.
I believe that the Chinese government should reconsider the regulations inside the policy. If they did this it would bring great happiness to the country.
