Whether comical, dramatic, or just a box office hit, movies like Chuck and Larry depict the life of a person who is homosexual. In Chuck and Larry gays were ridiculed and looked at as outsiders. Larry has difficulties naming his children as primary beneficiaries in his life insurance due to the death of his wife. One of the ways suggested for him to do so is to get married. Inspired by a newspaper article about domestic partnerships, Larry asks Chuck; his best friend and coworker; to enter a civil union with him. The two pretend to be gay to gain the insurance that can be granted to Larry’s kids. Through the movie Chuck and Larry see and experience the life of a gay person and couple, and deal with the persecution from society, and the ill way there once friends and coworkers react to them being gay. They get hateful looks and weird reactions, and are even called “faggots” a few times by “gay bashers” or people who are against the homosexual way of life. Although this movie has a lot of comical lines and is indeed very funny, the way gays are treated in this movie, is indeed quite real and horrific. With the recent Supreme Court ruling overturning sodomy laws, Canada’s, San Francisco's and Multnomah County Oregon's moves to allow same sex marriages, many Americans are wondering, what's the big deal about gay and lesbian marriage? In this day and age, where in the United States; the aspect or idea of “everyone is equal” is greatly pushed and enforced, why is it that same sex marriages are still outlawed in most states within this great countries borders? Gay couples should be given the right to marry just like any other person on this earth; they should be allowed to partake in the institution of matrimony, and have the legal safety net that protects couples emotional bonds and economic security in which marriage provides.
