The amount of sleep people receive is directly connected to their health. Teenagers often go without the necessary amount of sleep. Research has shown that sleep deprivation is widespread in adolescents. Because of the lack, teenagers suffer many effects that negatively impact their health. Almost all aspects of life and health are affected by not getting enough sleep.Sleep deprivation in adolescents has cognitive, emotional, and physical effects.
Sleep deprivation in adolescents has cognitive effects. A lack of sleep in teenagers tends to have a much more dramatic effect compared to adults who are sleep deprived. Siri Carpenter wrote “ some sleep experts contend that the nation’s early high school start times, increasingly common, are tantamount to abuse”(Sleep deprivation may 42). High school start times can be a hassle for some teenagers who go to bed later at night than other teenagers.Those same adolescents that are being sleep deprived though have to learn how to manage their own time well so that when they have to wake up in the morning for school they aren’t tired. Amy Wolfson, PhD of the College of Holy Cross, and Mary Carskadon, PhD of Brown University Medical School found that “students who reported that they were getting C’s,D’s, and F’s obtained about 25 minutes less sleep...than students who reported they were getting A’s and B’s”(Carpenter 42). Of course there are other factors that play a role in
students receiving C’s,D’s, and F’s like lack of studying. Being sleep deprived is one of the most outstanding factors of not reaching, of what should be, every students goal of getting A’s and B’s. Another troubling finding that was relayed in Carpenter’s article was “adolescent sleep difficulties are often associated with psychopathologies such as Depression and attention deficit hyperactive disorder(ADHD)”(42).
