Introduction
I. Imagine finding out that your all-time favorite baseball player tested positive for banned substances.
II. Many hall of fame caliber players have been linked to these PED’s (performance enhancing drugs)
III. The last few decades in professional baseball have been frequently referred to as the “Steroid Era” because of the increased speculation of excessive PED use
IV. The legacies of these players and the integrity of the game of baseball have been dampened by these allegations & investigations
V. Today I will tell you what PED’s are and talk about how they have affected Major League Baseball, and how they continue to effect Major League Baseball
Transition: So what are these substances and why are they illegal in professional baseball?
Body
I. Anabolic Steroids are powerful prescription drugs (New York Department of Health, 2008)
A. They are controlled substances that people abuse in high doses to boost their athletic performance (New York Department of Health, 2008)
B. Anabolic steroids help build muscle tissue and increase body mass by acting like the body's natural male hormone, testosterone (New York Department of Health, 2008)
1. Anabolic steroids are a chemical derivative of testosterone, the male sex hormone. (New York Department of Health, 2008)
2. Properly used, anabolic steroids can aid in the treatment of blood disorders, connective tissue disease, some cancers, intractable arthritis, some sexual dysfunctions and other serious illnesses (New York Department of Health, 2008)
C. Many athletic associations ban their use, including the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Olympics, so few athletes are willing to admit that they use these drugs (New York Department of Health, 2008)...
