Think twice before running that red light!
Speeding through a red light at the intersection of Hamburg Turnpike and Black Oak Ridge Road will soon cost you even when there is no police officer in sight. The intersection is the first in the counties of Passaic, Bergen or Morris to be selected in a state Department of Transportation pilot program that allows communities to install cameras to catch Violators. The Township was selected based on the number of accidents and summonses issued at the intersection. During 2005-07, there were 37 crashes and five summonses issued for running a red light, said DOT spokeswoman Erin Phalon.
The township expects to install cameras by the summer and will mail tickets to violators, Mayor Christopher Vergano said.
I think that this is a great idea to do because so many people prone to running red lights and getting away with it. On the corner of my street is probably the worst intersection in the town of Dumont, Prospect Ave. and Madison Ave. There are more head on collisions and also their times when people blow the light and have near misses with each other. If Dumont were to institute these cameras I think that people would be less likely to blow the traffic lights and would cause the rate of accidents to drop at this intersection and also many more.
