“Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” is one of the most loved poems in American literature. Robert Frost has stated that he wrote it on a warm June, 1922 morning. He had stayed awake all night and as he stretched, he looked out at the sun rising over the hills and composed this memorable poem. Frost uses a complex rhyme scheme along with a simple structure and word choice to create a poem that readers can enjoy for its simplicity, as well as consider its hidden interpretations.

Frost wanted his poem to be enjoyed for its literal beauty, for the sounds and texture he created with words. “The thing which had given him [Frost] the most pleasure in composing the poem was the effortless sound of that couplet about the horse…he wanted to direct his readers away from solemnly debating them; instead he invited them simply to be pleased with how he had put it” (Pritchard,1993, pp. 164-165).
