Analyze the Case
1. I think that Ms. New did the right thing by reassuring the skeptical community member that she will do the best job that she can do. She was not involved in the selection of her position. She is not a part of the politics and did the right thing because she does not know what damage her further commentary could do to the sensitive situation. Her decision to not report the incident was flawed because it will or could quickly become a game of he said, she said. If the incident was documented that would be proof that there is an issue with the constituents that were solely against her being placed into her position. Reporting it would have shown that she is following a procedure that would protect her from any wrong doing or possible back biting.
2. Having worked on the master schedule myself I know that one change can spark a plethora of issues. Ms. New may have not know the history of the schedule, testing results for certain teachers or the established planning period for grades and the amount of preps for teachers. Being new, I think she should have observed the schedule with as little change as possible and get a feel for who is doing what and how things seem to operate. Then, after a year or even a semester she could determine if change is needed. Also, she should have checked to see who has gifted certification, not just gifted coursework. The state laws for gifted education are clear and she needs to know if her change is in violation of the law. Additionally, she should not have made any drastic changes so close to the start of school, as we all know change is inevitable but we as teachers, hate change especially last minute change. This last minute move could cause her animosity from staff especially if Ms. Jones has the type of power described in the text.
