October 10, 2008 Dr. Klenowski *Crime Through* Hollywood Midterm Crime films offer the viewer many different looks into the world of crime. Whether its crime on a community level, national level, or world level the viewer gets an inside look at crime. Crime films tend to have a contradicting sense of satisfaction. They do this by criticizing some part of societyand our criminal justice system. They also offer a resolution or a sense of victory over the bad guy. What is ideology as it refers to film? How do movies help mold ideologies? Describe how crime films offer pleasure. What is a documentary? Why are documentaries important for the study of crime and punishment? Movies help mold ideologies by what they do and do not show; while allowing assumptions about the nature of reality that are found within the film to be viewed and digested (ex: language and imagery). Crime films are noted for offering different types of pleasure. The offer escape from the boringness of everyday life into the darker sides of life, opportunities to solve, identify, discuss, and pursue different crimes, hope, and revenge or retribution. They also offer the chance to watch others suffer or voyeuristic views, inspiration and the expression of resistance to authority or your heroic vigilante. The documentary film started in the 1920’s and is rooted in non-fictional accounts that are from the eyes of a third party. Documentary films are important for the study of crime and punishment because they teach the audience about a person, place, or event. They attempt to document reality by telling a true story, but are not rooted in pure journalism. They attempt to uncover, discover, and understand different events. Documentaries are portraits of real life that use real life as the raw material for the film.
