Facilitation Paper
I. Your Performance
A.I was going for a laissez-faire type of leadership. As I was facilitating I did not view myself as better or worse than any of the members in my group, and I tried really hard to not be overbearing or dominating. Although I lead and directed the conversation and had to play the gatekeeper role but I felt that I was democratic enough where everyone felt comfortable voicing their opinions. It was my goal to make sure the group stayed on topic and that everyone was included and I strongly believed I achieved that. I believe that managed to stay away from being authoritarian. I choose a topic where a decision or a consensus had to be made and it helped that I choose a topic that was not controversial in any way. I think my performance as a facilitator went well, and I think I succeeded in leading my group in a way that was open and not dominating which allowed my group members to have an organic and free flowing conversation. I believe I kept the subject on track and everyone’s contribution was great and no one was ever off topic.
B. Overall I believe my facilitation went well, however I am now aware that there are a few things more I need to improve on. I think my topic was good and it was something that everyone could touch on. I felt that I was committed in keeping the conversation going for almost twenty minutes. The questions I selected were open ended which allowed the group to answer them according the way they see best fits them. I also remembered to answer my own questions in the middle of the conversation which is very important as well. I believe that I well in active listening and letting my group know that they have my full attention to each individual. I also think I did well in summarizing after mostly everyone spoke, acknowledging and briefly giving an overview on what they just said.
