Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation at workplaces in Almaty
It seems to all that there is no sexual orientation discrimination in Kazakhstan and little is heard about cases in which such a discrimination takes place. However, sexual orientation discrimination is a serious issue that may come about in every organization. In Kazakhstan many organizations don’t have a clear policy that protects gay and lesbian employees from discrimination and harassment at the workplace. Kazakhstani constitution prohibits any kind of discrimination and harassment; however, there is no separate law or act to protect sexual minorities. Therefore, gay and lesbian employees don’t have a solid ground to protect themselves against discrimination. Majority of lesbians and gays has to keep in secret their sexual orientation in order to be employed to the organization.
Nowadays, western countries consider the problem of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation as the pressing issue to be dealt with. Kazakhstan, in fact, cannot ignore and stay away without paying attention to the same issue. Particularly, discrimination in employment is the major problem of sexual minorities in each society including Kazakhstan. However, there are limited number of information and researches that have been conducted about influence of sexual orientation on the employment in the country. Therefore, our group of students is intended to conduct the research that will closely examine problems of sexual minorities as itself together with policies, attitudes of organizations and people- society, towards discrimination of sexual minorities in Almaty. Moreover, this research is the study of how the society in Almaty deals with sexual minorities, reasons for discrimination and rights and limitations of sexual minorities for protecting themselves against discrimination.
